Hello, I'm wondering what to do about this - as my son was shutting down his netbook last night he gave a great sigh as it showed there were 42 updates to do! It's a brand new machine and running on Windows 7 starter. It is stuck on Update 28 - the same as he left it last night. Wondering if this is normal and just leave it or what!!!! Would it muck up the whole system to switch it off (as you obviously shouldn't do!) I just don't know it this is right or not, never had this trouble on our PC or laptop..... The 'dots' after the 28 of 42 are moving, and the cursor is going round and round as if it's 'waiting' or 'stuck' or something. Any help would be much appreciated!

Just to add that it has 1GB memory, he bought a 2GB thingy (sorry!) to add on later...... would this be the problem - just running more slowly than a more powerful machine? Thanks again!

  • Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows.

Most new laptops seem to want to do bucket loads of updates, which rarely all go smoothly.

I would do a hard reset - turn off and disconnect the battery - restart, shut down normally, and let it try again.

It probably will do all the updates eventually, but you may have to repeat the above process.

Another option is to turn off the auto updater, which should be in the control panel somewhere.

Windows uses serious sounding words for the updates such as 'security' and 'important', but I doubt any of the updates are critical to your use of the computer.

Hard reset is a LAST resort !!!, try moving the panel that is showing the download installation and see if there is something underneath waiting for you to agree to !!

Try press and release the power button and see if that shuts down in a controlled manner, if it goes to sleep then you will need to change the setting on what the power button does.

If you press and hold the power button, that forces the machine into the off state, but it could cause more problems, as whatever it is doing is cut off immediately, so you could get half installed upadates.
