Loft Insulation

Options
Hi

I live in Northern Ireland and have decided coming into the winter to think a bit more about insulation. Looked online and found loft insulation at £3 a roll in homebase and thought brilliant. Then realised it was not available in Northern Ireland as we do not participate in the same scheme as those in England etc. I thought I would check it out in store here anyway.

Shock shock! The same roll costs £30 here. Couldn't believe the difference. That scheme seems to be a great idea allowing everyone to save money and meet target emmisions.

I looked into whether there was a similar scheme here. Unfortunately as with everything in Northern Ireland they give all the grants for insulation to those who happen to do !!!! all. (not tarring all with the same brush here, I know there are genuine cases). Unfortunately we are in the minority and work, so we dont qualify for the grants.

Any advice as to how I could insulate the loft for a reasonable price?

Cheers

Aye looked into it, not me im afraid. Married and our wages areabove the thresholds. Not looking for something for nothing, just something more along the lines of 3 quid a roll. Wishful thinking.

Oh i be fed up as well . Ask around in Ireland where other people buy their Loft Insulation from.
    Fingers crossed for you.
  • You could try B&Q as I bought the space blanket foil covered insulation from there a few weeks ago for £3.59 a roll (200mm). They seem to do an offer maybe once or twice a year here - usually Sept/ Oct. I had also looked at the grants available from powerni but as you say they didn't apply as we earn over the threshold. They did'nt get to the full 200mm loft more like 150mm so you may need extra. Btw I'm in N'abbey.
  • Despite what the government says about helping older people with their enegy costs, I have been told that the government scheme to award warm homes grants will be stopped in December 2011. I was advised to let as many people as possible to apply before the deadline.

I assume you mean this for NI

    Am I eligible?

You could be eligible for the Warm Homes Scheme if you:
    • Receive an income, disability, tax, or housing-related benefit
    • Have a child under 16
    • Are pregnant
    • Are aged 60 or over
    • Have Solid Fuel, Economy 7, Bottled Gas system (LPG) or no system at all
You may also qualify for the scheme even if you're not presently getting any benefits. When you apply, a check will be done to see if you're eligible for benefits and the grant.
