I've just found out (shame on me I know) that for the past 5 years I have been paying mortgage protection on a mortgage I paid off. Is there any way I could claim any of that back?

Yes. However, it does not require a complaint.
You just need to notify the insurer that the mortgage was repaid on x date (supply evidence if you can) and that you request a refund of contributions from that date as there was no longer any insurable interest and the policy would not have paid out had a claimable event occurred.
Most will refund for the reasons given there.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. they may refund, but you're relying on a gesture of goodwill. it would have been your responsibility to cancel it (thats what they'll say)0
