Eon Final Bill - estimated?

I recently switched electricity suppliers away from EON and was asked by the new supplier to provide meter readings. Gave them immediately to the new firm (Eon had refused to take my readings in the run up to the change) and 2 weeks later have received an estimated final bill from Eon.

This despite them sending an actual meter reader around two days after the switchover date.

Of course, this would not be a problem if they hadn't overestimated my electricity use. I haven't even reached the estimated reading over two weeks later.

Not overly keen on paying the newly increased Eon rates on power I have not even used yet. Is it usual for them to estimate a reading at the end? Eon systems were down this morning so no one could answer me and emailing them takes ages.......

This seems to be a common Eon practice.

You seem to understand the correct switching protocol of providing the transfer reading (only) to the gaining supplier. Dealing with the Eon "estimated interim final bill" is as straightforward as dealing with any "estimated" bill. Simply provide a "customer reading" and ask for the bill to be re-issued. Make Eon "pay" for their selfish "estimated interim final bill" idiocy.

To be fair it seems to happen with all suppliers. You give the reading to the new supplier and something seems to go wrong with them telling the old supplier the reading, so the old supplier simply makes a reading up and waits for the customer to complain. It seems that they can't take a final reading from the customer before they've issued an estimated reading and then they can take the reading and correct it. It's happened to me every time I've changed suppliers.

You dont say which fuel(s). In elec the reading is sent from new supplier to meter reading organisation who validate the reading and pass it back to the new supplier who sends a copy to the old supplier so that both suppliers then use same reading.

If it passes validation the reading is used.
If it fails validation the meter reading organisation will estimate a reading to be used.

As I said, Electricity only. Thanks for the info on how/why they do it.

They were quick to try to get me to stay but very slow to reply once I'd gone. I have asked them to adjust their meter readings and will take it further if necessary.

    JPR,

For your knowledge and future reference, it is the NEW supplier that collects opening meter readings and sends them for validation to the meter reading organisation. Whatever 'happened' to your meter reading so that another estimate reading was send to EON, its not EON's fault. EON will of course agree your original reading with your new supplier so that both companies are billing to the same reading. It shows your ignorance to blame the losing supplier for an estimate change of supplier reading. But now that your educated, your might want to contact your new supplier to investigate why your experience as their new customer has so far being a disappointment.

    Hi JPR

Sorry we've sent you an estimated final bill.

As others have said, it's the responsibility of the gaining supplier to tell the losing supplier the readings they'll use to open their account.

The losing supplier will then use the same readings to close their account. This is to make sure the electricity is only charged once.

Estimates will be used if there's a delay in receiving the readings. These will be amended once we receive the actual readings.

It's great you've noted the changeover reads. Make sure these match your new suppliers opening and our closing reads. If they don't, there's an industry wide agreement for sorting these matters. It's called an Agreed Reads Dispute (ARD).

If there's a discrepancy, ask either us or your new supplier to raise an ARD.

Hope this is useful JPR. Give me a shout if you need any more info as happy to help.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I was waiting for an official reply via the website but my message from 29th Sept. hasn't been answered.

Finally found a number and a CS person with a working computer has taken the proper readings.

His estimate is that this should take 4 to 6 weeks to sort out!!!! Jeez - computers eh?

Not only that, but I have a credit on my account of over £1000 which I don't expect to see for a couple of months more.
