CTC/WTC very confused.

Ok i have spent most of the morning helping my neighbour... and its left me utterly confused (i used to think i was intelligent!!:rotfl:)

Basic question.. 2 working parents, mum works 18 hrs and earns £6000, dad works 50ish hrs earns £18500 2 kids age 12 & 15, no childcare costs , minimal savings, how much per yr are they entitled too.. HMRC calculator says £59 per week, HMRC say no basic rate is all they are entitled to so £545 per yr.. Who is right the HMRC calculator or Hmrc themselves.

Now for the complicated bits..

For yr ending April 2011, HMRC actually have her income down as £29500, for various reason when she go the renewal this yr she never bothered correcting it. It should have been £24500 (the same as this yrs will be ). Anyway she corrected it over the phone last week and they said it will be referred ??? Has she been underpaid for last yr and if so will she a refund and how long do this things take (i did suggest she asked the HMRC but she gets confused easily).

Thanks in advance.. i'm beginning to wish i'd never stopped for idle chit chat with her now lol !

On £24500 I make it about £56pw. Even on £29k they'd get a bit more than just the family element.
  • Thankyou.. and thats exactly what the calculators were telling us ..

I have her letter here (well she is here as well )... and this is what is says..

    Basic... 366 days (6/4/2011 to 5/4/2011) £1921.5
    Second element £1950.78
    30 hr element £790.56
total working tax credit elements (other than childcare) £4662.84
reduction due to your income £4662.84

amount for the period 0.000 so thats the WTC which we agree with

    then ... 2 qualifying children £5116.68

    family elements
    basic £ 545.34
    total £5662.02
reduction due to your income £5116.88

amount for this period £545.34 but we think this should be higher.

So what is the income it is based on? It must be more than £30,272.
  • Supposedly £24500 , £6k for her and £18500 for him .. i am presuming someone somewhere has got there figures wrong? either she's told them wrong over the phone or they have entered them into the system wrongly.

What does it say on the letter which you quoted the above figures from? Income will be there somewhere
  • She's is on the phone to them now... they have her down as earning £33600.
  • Ha ha we have sorted it.. spoke to a very helpful man and he has corrected her household income and reckons she should be getting around £55 per week but couldnt say for certain as the computer needs to update everything.. x
