lost sound onw/media player and itunes

I've lost the sound on both and haven't a clue why

Anyway have pulled out a socket somewhere at the back of the PC, also have you muted the sound its the little speaker Icon by the PCs clock, just check to see if any exclamation marks are in device manager, by doing this, Start, Run, then type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.0
