I don't see how the marital status can make a difference here as each individual tenant is referenced in either case.0

Is it perhaps because a married person is legally responsible for any debts of their spouse but an unmarried person isn't? Therefore a married couple would only need one credit check as it would be deemed to cover both parties?0

Actually, £70 each sounds quite cheap so it could have been much, much worse. In the great scheme of things, £70 is a drop in the ocean where housing costs are concerned.0

Hi, we are married and have had to pay £70 each for a check, so maybe thats just something your particular EA does. Not that I agree with it, but as we are both responsible for the rent, we are both to have checks.0

I doubt it has anything to do with your marital status. They always end up screwing you out of two referencing fees if you are a couple.0

Have you already told them you're not married? If not - could you not tell them you are? Plenty of people keep their own names nowadays and I can't imagine they'd ask you to prove it with a marriage certificate (unless they're really over zealous!) I'm not married either and I'd also be really narked if they tried to make me and my boyfriend pay double admin fees!0
