Rip-off Britain 'is worst place to live in Europe'

"Britain is 'the worst place to live in Europe', it has been officially confirmed

People in this country are getting a ‘raw deal’ on quality of life and cost of living, according to a new study.

Alcohol costs more in Britain than the average in the rest of Europe.

Things are so bad that one in ten of us is considering emigrating, says uSwitch, which put Britain bottom of its quality of life index.

‘Last year, our neighbours in Ireland were worse off but now we can’t even console ourselves with that,’ said Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy for the price comparison website.

‘We are now officially bottom of the pile. We may still be enjoying the fourth highest household income in Europe but the high cost of living means that we’re living to work.’"

Odd. The printed version of the article published the league table, but the digital version hasn't. Here is part of the table:

    1. France
    2. Spain.
    3. Italy.
    4. Netherlands.
    5. Germany.
    6. Denmark.
    7. Poland.
    8. Sweden.
    9. Ireland.
    10. Britain.

So we're the worst place to live in Europe - funny but the last time I looked there were 50 or so countries in Europe - is the article really saying that we're in the top 10?

That's what I thought, and when you look at the criteria used (beer and fags prices), it makes you glad we're that far down.

Why on earth is expensive cigarettes a bad thing? At least I can have a pint or a meal without someone blowing carcinogens in my face all evening.

That's not down to the price, just the law on smoking in public places.
If that law weren't in place you'd still have some people puffing away in pubs/restaurants even if they cost twice what they do.

Article written by a socialist perhaps.

"Britons have the lowest holiday entitlement in Europe and one of the highest retirement ages."

Maybe that's why we are better placed than others to tackle the financial issues.

Hiya RM. You appear to have missed the question.
    No worries, I shall repost.
