Rip-off Britain 'is worst place to live in Europe'

Rip-off Britain 'is worst place to live in Europe'

"Britain is 'the worst place to live in Europe', it has been officially confirmed

People in this country are getting a ‘raw deal’ on quality of life and cost of living, according to a new study.
Alcohol costs more in Britain than the average in the rest of Europe.

Things are so bad that one in ten of us is considering emigrating, says uSwitch, which put Britain bottom of its quality of life index.

‘Last year, our neighbours in Ireland were worse off but now we can’t even console ourselves with that,’ said Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy for the price comparison website.

‘We are now officially bottom of the pile. We may still be enjoying the fourth highest household income in Europe but the high cost of living means that we’re living to work.’"

Why leave the country? Surely far better to stay and campaign for one's country to improve, rather than just up and go elsewhere.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • I liked the emphasis given to the cost of alcohol, as though that was the major contributor to quality of life. :)

    thats what i wondered
Alcohol is a luxury in my mind
the cost of the basic and things you are required to pay/have are more pertinent

I was actually wondering about this today with the news regarding the EU bail out fund increase
how does the UK stand vs other countries
I know when I was in Oz I had a higher standard of living o a comparitivly lower wage
how does the UK compare in real terms with the rest of the EU

Odd. The printed version of the article published the league table, but the digital version hasn't. Here is part of the table:

    1. France
    2. Spain.
    3. Italy.
    4. Netherlands.
    5. Germany.
    6. Denmark.
    7. Poland.
    8. Sweden.
    9. Ireland.
    10. Britain.

    but based on what factors
France and Spain top the index of ten countries. The table considered working hours, VAT, holidays, health and education costs and hours of sunshine.

British households struggle with the highest food and diesel prices in Europe, while petrol, alcohol and cigarettes cost more than the average on the continent, the report says.

Britons have the lowest holiday entitlement in Europe and one of the highest retirement ages.

fags and booze are not a quality of life factor for me
food and fuel i will agree are a factor for most but i offset that with cycling where i can
how many people who moan about the cost of fuel use their car far more than they need to and do so inefficiently?
hours of sunshine cannot be added into a table like this. there is nothing we can do about that.
working hours isnt an easy one. working loads of hours for not much money is one thing
a well paid job that requires hours but remunerates that with pay and conditions is a different animal.
health & education costs? as in whats spent or what its costs?
  • What ever is bad about 'good ole Blighty' there is nothing like getting back from somewhere overseas and getting a 'proper cup of tea'

There is no where in the world I have been where tea tastes like it does here

Why on earth is expensive cigarettes a bad thing? At least I can have a pint or a meal without someone blowing carcinogens in my face all evening.
