Pay rates on garage when in receipt of Income Support?

I was asked if a person residing in Northern Ireland who was claiming income support and as a result had their rates paid for them built a garage would they pay rates on their garage or not? I said I would ask on here because I knew someone would know the answer and then I would get back to them.
I hope this makes sense!

Do you mean council tax by rates? I don't think a garage affects council tax (if it is built on your own property/ property you live in)0 -

I think it is called council tax in mainland Uk and domestic rates in Northern Ireland!0 -
I don't know the answer to your question I'm afraid but I do know that when I rented a garage, which wasn't on or adjoining my property but was about 200 metres away, I managed to get the valuation board to assess it as zero value for council tax purposes.0

It would be built beside the house but not attached to the house, on the same land owned by the same person. HTH!0 -

They will be delighted to hear that, will go and tell them now! :j :beer:0
