Sanding staircase: us or the professionals?

We've just ripped up the carpet on our (oak?) staircase. We already have a quotation for sanding and finishing the floor in the hall beneath, but are wondering whether to attempt the staircase ourselves. We don't have the tools required, so would have to hire or buy them, and we're fairly inexperienced DIYers. Is this a job for professionals/competent DIYers, or should we give it a go?

Thanks,

    its a simple enough job.
it just takes a long time to do it properly.
i hate to think how much someone would charge to do it. properly.

a heatgun/scraper and some sandpaper is not that expensive.
    Get some gorm.

Thanks. Time isn't on our side, sadly. But then again, nor is money!

Having just sanded our floors and staircase I'd say its definitely possible to DIY it. For just the stairs you will need to hire an edger and a corner sander beware though that the edger we got was quite big and heavy so was a pain to move around.

You won't be able to use the edger on the stair risers, we couldn't get a good enough finish on them with the sanding equipment we had as they were previously painted so we sanded them flat and painted them white and they look really good along with our white banister uprights and skirting and the sanded wood treads.

Hmm, no idea. (I did warn you we were amateurs!) Will take and upload some more snaps.

    Thanks again,

  • I forgot to add that we want to sand the entire (quite big) staircase, panelled wooden balustrade and all.
  • The more I think about it and look at it, the more intimidating a job it seems!
