I think you misunderstand, I do not mean tying the dog up and disappearing off for half an hour when I go to Sainsbury but going to the paper shop or the post office, they still have to be tied up. I am driving to the post office so I can get back and walk the dog. Seems a waste of petrol - and time - to me, might as well walk the dog to the post office, leave her outside while I go in and I can see her from where I am and I kill 2 birds with one stone.

I have done it loads of times with my other dog, she is still here, did not get kicked and no-one got bitten - but I have a blue staff and get too many comments on wanting her so I cannot leave her outside so I've stopped walking to the shop and drive instead now.

I have found this: http://www.dogstuff.co.uk/acatalog/Security_Leads.html and was interested in whether anyone else has one or something like it. I see plenty of dogs tied up outside shops - even outside the school - I cannot begin to imagine that no-one on these boards, whatsoever, does not leave their dog outside a shop, however, living in 'the sticks' it seems ridiculous to drive to the shop each day when I could be walking and so walking the dogs at the same time.

I actually presumed that you were talking about the local shops and not Sainsbury or whatever.

It is up to you of course and if you feel it is safe enough then that is fair enough.

The petloc thing seems okay, although you'd only need the same equipment as you need to nick a bicycle to break it.

Anyone taking mine would get dragged backwards all the way to local pond...they would soon let go

  • Please don't do it. A dog that my dog plays with was attacked outside the papershop by two staffies. In less than 30 seconds this poor dog was attacked so badly he needed over 50 stitches and his owner was left with a £600 vet bill.

The two staffies are still walking about.

    Ok a little strory ;)

Used to take Zara every night to a petrol station shop to get my ciggies.

Done it million times with no problems, leaving her sitting nicely outside (not tied up) by the side of the big glass sliding doors - could see her, she was ok staying for those literally 2-3 minutes like that.

One evening, went in leaving her outside as usual and the second I got to the till (directly opposite the big glass sliding doors) - I hear some massive commotion behind me ... Turned around and there is my sweet Zara rounding up .... 2 Policemen

Run outside trying to call her but she would nto have it. She was circling around those 2 really big guys (vests hats etc) and they were standing there.. with their hands up:rotfl:

In a way it was quite comical and without thinking I sai - why you have your hands up? She is not shooting at you, she is barking ....

They replied - get that dog under control or we will size the dog.... To which I burst into histerics and asked them "how exactly are you gonna do that?" :rotfl:

I know I know, it was wrong but the whole situation was out of this world really.... All the petrol station guys came out, they all knew Zara, they all gave her cuddles before and start shouting at the Police that Zara is NEVER like that - obviously those uniforms/vests spooked her and them putting hands UP did not help....

Through all this Zara still running circles around the 2 Policemen, hair up, barking and generally loking pretty scary....

Shop staff, customers around us in histerics at "we gona size the dog" coming from 2 guys with their hands up ;)

Well, got hold of my furry monster, clipped her on a lead.. she calmed down straight away - all this could not have lasted more than 2-3 minutes but felt like ages....

Police wanted to see her ID tag (of course she had one), gave me bo...ng (rightly so) for leaving the dog outside the shop and not tied up... and we went home.

Zara hates Policemen with passion now.... met thos 2 another day, she was on a lead and they were on the other side of the road but she still wanted to eat them....

Ahhhhh... I know it is bad of me to laugh but it was so funny.....to watch :D

It only takes a second for someone to steal a dog from outside a shop. We have had loads of dogs going missing from shops near me. Too many naive owners thinking only a couple of minutes won't hurt but if someone is intent on having that dog then they will. It is however the owners decision.

I was bitten by a spaniel tied up outside a shop when I was a child. It wasn't my grandad's fault, he simply didn't anticipate my love for mutts quickly enough.

Anyhoo, it didn't put me off dogs, nor degter me from petting them outside shops, but I learned to approach with caution and test the waters first. It also taught me to teach my children NEVER to touch dogs outside shops

. Nonetheless, when pushing a trolley out of the supermarket, there are always several dogs tied up, and space constraints ensure everyone must pass close to them. Some are waggy tailed, some are nervy and some are downright nasty and shouldn 't be left unattended.

I don't leave my dogs outside shops, as one is nervy, and you just never know with certainty how they will react. If your bites someone.....
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Eeeek, I couldn't leave mine outside the shop even for 2 seconds.
They'd either get nicked, get attacked by some little yappy thing (and not be able to walk away like they normally would) or scare every single person walking past as they are so big!
    Simply couldn't risk it.

I leave mine outside the local shop every day. I know the security guy and he keeps an eye on them for me.

Neither of them are pedigree dogs, so not considered valuable, and my female dog weighs 40kg...if she decides she's not going anywhere, believe me, she's not moving! Trying to shift her against her will is like trying to drag a wall down. And she definitely wouldn't go anywhere willingly with a stranger.

I'm only in the shop a matter of two minutes and can see the dogs at all times, so quite happy to continue like this.

Having worked in rescue and taken many calls from people looking for their dogs that had been stolen from outside shops, I know I'd never do it. It's simply not worth the risk IMHO.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
