not sure if this belongs here but couldnt find anywhere else for it to go.
We went to get my husbands passport yesterday...we did the check and send , had his mums birth certificate and his too. but they was unable to do it
gets confusing now
..i wont use real names....
his mum on her birth certificate is smith...
his mum on his birth certificate is johnson..
then she married his dad and is a west
the man at post office had said we need evidence of all changes of names.
we found out that hubbys nanna had his mum put her under her maiden name (smith)
nanna later married and had other children under the name johnson. and had changed his mums names to match the rest. but there is no legal documents for this change she just seemed to have taken his name?
then his mum married into west.
the reason for not being able to sort passport out is ..hubbys mums name on her birth certificate does not match her maiden name on hubbys birth certificate
....
what would we have to do to sort it out ? we are at citizens advice tomorrow but just wondered in the meantime if anyone knew?

You need to get copies of the deed polls that changed her name from her mums maiden name to her mums married name...and then mums marriage certificate to verify her new married name.
There is an archive place in London where you can access all these documents if you dont have them anymore.(There must have been something legal even if nan didnt *actually* see the papers-and you'll find them at this centre)I cant remember what it is but when DH gets into the office Ill give him a call for you and ask.
We had about 4 different names in our process and were in South Africa when I was applying for my passport.DH went into this place in London-got all the stuff we needed and sent it to us in SA.
It does mean you can use check and send (anything more than the exact standard seems to confuse staff at that end too much and they'd rather send you away than rummage through huge piles of documents) but once you have them you just send them to the applications department (with a small fee to send your docs back to you recorded mail). If I remember correctly I did wait a bit longer for my passport but I wasnt asked for any more info once I had all the relevant birth certificates, deed polls and marriage certificates.
And Ive got to do it all again for DS now too coz his passport was in my maiden name and when DH and I got married we did a deed poll to change DS name to my married name too:D0 -
If you havent got any tickets booked or anything, I would do the following.
Firstly I would not use check and send as they just check the documents for £5, and I dont think it is worth it, when you send the documents, if the passport agency has any problems they will contact you by phone/letter and request the extra.
If the mother has always had a passport from a young age or even birth, this will show a link, and therefore when the passport number of the mother is shown to the passport agency they can verify the name change assuming the name changes are there.
Therefore if you have the time, send all the docs (if it does not include the mothers passport number then add a letter with it, explaining the change) and see what they say.
If they do turn you down, you can always write and ask which agency can you use to verify DNA, and then you will get a passport.0
