Europe falls apart

The question I'm asking is whether Europe (including Switzerland) is a better place for the existence of the EU than it would be if nobody had bothered.

The vast majority of Europeans think it is. Even some of the little Englanders who hate Britain being in it would agree, if they can suppress their knee-jerks for a moment, that it hasn't been a bad thing for the rest of Europe.

The fact that the Swiss have chosen not to join for the time being doesn't seem relevant.

That is a question that I suppose we cannot answer with accuracy as we can only surmise what may or may not have happened and that summarisation being dependent upon many things that we may or may not have had control over. Running the economy as we have seen is not an exact science.

The fact that the Swiss have chosen not to join seems very relevant as they have proved they can trade with Europe and do well, same as I believe some one has said the Norwegians without having the bureaucracy and cost associated with being a paid up 'member'

The idea of free trade between European countries was a great initiative, the continuous meddling in countries affairs and laws is not. As for your comments about the vast majority of Europeans thinking it is ... it depends from which view point you take this... business perhaps, but from the average person in the street not. I worked for a very large company and travelled frequently across Europe, most despised the Euro, and like many English/British people didnt like the meddling in their countries affairs. So I can only assume you mean the poorer countries that are having billions pumped into them and their citizens who left in droves to travel to the richer countries where they can earn more and have a better standard of living ?
