Just done a housing benefit check-up, and both calculators said different. Opinions?

Both calculators come up with VERY different amounts for the same information.

If I am a single 19-20 year old male, how much would I likley receive if the rent was £450 and my income was £840 take home.

Advice please, I need this information for when I have to move next year

  • One calculation said - £33 a week ( unlikley)

another said - £0 (I forgot to add rent in calculation)

Third said - £16 per week

It depends on what council area you come under and what your circumstances are. It also depends on who you are renting through (private L/L or council house/housing association)
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

For private rentals the actual rent figure is not relevant as it will be based on the LHA for the shared room rate for your area http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_196239, this is likely to be far lower than £450 per month and is what they would base the maximum payment
    What is the LHA rate?

How do I find out the LHA rate? I don't know about the area I am moving to. But, the maximum you can receive under 25 (35 by time I move) here is £53 per week toward your rent.

Ok I checked on that site. The LHA is £83 per week for the area I am living in.

If it helps I received £22 per week benefit when my rent was £95 per week and was earning £108 per week

your income will be too high for any help - if you run through the entitledto calculator and put in your details with the LHA rate...it comes back as zero

Yet another one says £33 and another £16 :S
  • Ok think I have done it accuretly now. £0.00 whilst earning the £840, but can get a 25% single person reduction still.

When I drop my hours to part-time and become a student, will get no council tax and £12 towards rent.

If you are going to be a full time student you will pay no council tax but you cannot claim housing benefit unless you are a single parent or disabled. Your student funding will be used to house you

even if you were a part time student and could claim, would you earn enough from a part time job to pay the other £400 per month rent and bills?
