Running a Microwave in a truck

I am hoping you can help me out. In an effort to help our with moneysaving I am trying to get my hubby a domestic microwave for his truck. He spends a fortune on food out and it's ridiculous. He already has a fridge. I have just phoned Comet and they have been next to useless in helping me.

I have seen this microwave; http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=811702&tab=specification#spec

I understand from hubby that I need to get an invertor ? He has 12 or 24 volt outlet. So I need something that powers up the fridge and the microwave. Can anyone help a rather dim wife, when it comes to electronics !!! Also where is the best place to get something like this ? Thankyou !

I'd try a shop specialising in caravan and camping equipment. Or possibly somewhere that supplies motorhomes. They should know all about running electrical items off inverters.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • He's done the camping stove and saucepan for about 2 years now and is more limited as to what he can make to eat. He's sick of tomatoe soup and cheese sandwiches !! LOL. He goes away for 7 days at a time and it will save loads more money in the end if I make up dinners and he can heat them up - more healthy variety of food aswell.

I can't recommend anywhere but you could try looking for electrical equipment suppliers for narrow boats. Even the 2000W inverter at Maplin may not be able to supply sufficient current for the 750W (output power) microwave and it would need the engine running to prevent flattening the battery.

  • I'm afraid that this is not going to help you much now but Aldi were doing something about a fortnight ago. As a non-teccie, I can only describe it as a lead with a cigarette lighter plug on one end and a 13 amp socket on the other. I was thinking about getting one to run my lappy on in my van but I forgot (a frequent occurence) so consequently I did not research the power handling capabilities.

Not as cheap to buy initially, but they do make them, see here:

However they do make lower voltage ones on sale at caravan accessory shops I believe, which will just use a normal inverter.

    Hope this helps.

If you are looking for a ordinary one, there are some very cheap ones on e-bay if you look under compact microwaves, they are often ex-catalogue stock. Saw one around £25 with £8 postage.
