Moving to new build - Suppliers

Am moving to a new build in November.

Currently have British Gas (Gas) and EDF Energy (Electric) at my present property.

I am confused as to who to go with in the new property as I won't have any previous data to go on.

Has anyone been in this situation and what did they do, just keep with existing suppliers, or cancel at old property and take up new suppliers from day one of moving in?

I'm also assuming that I wouldn't be entitled to any cashback as not really switching?

  • The builders of your new property will have registered the gas and electric with a supplier, if only to be able to boil their kettle:rotfl:.

You will need to register with that supplier on the day you move in and give them the meter readings on that day so you do not pay for the builders usage.

You will then be free to switch to a new supplier but as that can take 4-6 weeks you will have used some el and gas with the original one and will get a final bill. If you do intend to switch make sure you do not sign up to a tariff with an exit penalty.

Now who to go to, if you put into a comparison site the national average figures of about 16500 kwh gas and 3200 kwh electric that will show you who is potentially the cheapest, but it will not show how much you will pay as that depends on your future usage.

Best thing with your existing property is to cancel BG and EDF on your leaving day, giving them readings. If you do decide to switch to them at your new place then you will be a new customer and entitled to cashback.
  • I am in the same position as the OP except I will have electricity only and no gas. I need to register with a supplier who is disabled friendly. i.e. easy access to social tariff and the ability to make monthy payments. I am currently with Scottish Electric for my gas and my electricity is on a pre-payment meter. Should I stick with SE initially (for new property) and continue to make monthly payments whilst assessing when/who to switch to?
I want to avoid a situation where my DD has potentially not covered all my gas usage at the old property. Enough things to have to find money for when moving without an additional bill!

Can anyone offer any advice please?

check with the builder to see if actually registered with gas supplier as they do not always do so, if they say no then check m number line just in case 0870 608 1524 if again no then you are free to register with whom you please.

    Are EPCs required on new-builds?

I don't know if it is a requirement, but I have one for mine. A rating - feeling a bit smug 'bout that :D

Yes we have one of the new build as a 'A' rating. Might be the fact they have installed a solar thermal for hot water?

Thanks for the info NBG. We are at the development this Sunday to choose kitchen, tiles, etc. and will ask then.

So much to think about when moving I've now resulted to carrying a A4 pad with me all day as when I think of something I'm writing it down. Still to get removals in for quotes!

The EPC - if there is one - will tell you the annual fuel bill - estimated.

Yup, solar panels and air source heat pump. :D

Anyone have any suggestions about whether I should stay with SE or register with another supplier??
