I have offered to help a friend get their business of the ground. I'm looking to create a website for them - nothing too flash at the moment, just a page or two to tell them about their business and how to contact them etc.
Can anyone offer advice on where to start? Looking for something reasonably priced in case business doesn't take off!
Any comments/suggestions/ideas welcome!

https://www.hostsphere.co.uk £19.99 per year hosting, .co.uk domain name £6.98 for 2 years.
Install Wordpress via one click installer. Enjoy.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
Try searching on GBBO (getting british business online) - they are offering free domains etc etc.
I set one up for my company initially with them, but moved the domain as I wanted to use more features (& wordpress!) - but should be ok for what you need.

If you're looking for somewhere to build a website than I can strongly recommend Weebly.com to get you started, a lot of people disagree with this route but you can personalise it to suit your needs and if you are only after 1 or 2 pages at the moment this is a good solution in my mind.
You can buy a domain name from 123reg for like £2.99 a year if you don't have one.
I have a weebly site myself if you want the link to see what you can get with it?0 -

Don't do it OP!!! Unless of course you want a website that looks like everyone else on GBBO.JuniorDesigner wrote: »If you're looking for somewhere to build a website than I can strongly recommend Weebly.com to get you started, a lot of people disagree with this route but you can personalise it to suit your needs and if you are only after 1 or 2 pages at the moment this is a good solution in my mind.

Again, set templates with Weebly.
Also the domain name may be £2.98 per year but the .co.uk will have to be registered for 2 years meaning £5.96 plus VAT (£7.12)Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -
Microsoft !!!!!!!!!! small buisness - free hosting, loads of space and hundereds of customisable templates... and Domain registration is cheap as well. I have used them for 3 years and never had a problem - or come acros another site that looks like mine!0

They are set templates correct but you can adjust the look of it if you know your HTML and CSS as you can use the editor.0 -
Have a look at Daily.co.uk I have to say that in the two years iv'e been with them ive never had a problem. They also have some good deals atm too. Their customer serves is second-to-none awell.
Good luck with whoever you decide to go with.0 -
If they do take off would you want to make the website bigger and better? If that is the case I can't recommend something like Wordpress enough. It will make it very easy for them to expand the website from 1-2 pages to as many as they need without having to undergo a redesign.
As for hosting, 123 reg is quite a good host. Godaddy is cheap for domains though.
Hope that helps!0 -

I agree M****softs current Small Business offering is excellent for relatively simple sites - especially if you can take the opportunity to use you own design software when it's effectively free if limited hosting .
However there is a big catch - it's going in it's current form shortly and the replacement will be paid for and sharepoint based fine if you want that but no use to me I'm afraid. See the !!!!!!!!!! Small Business Site for details (sorry not allowed to post a link). I've been abusing this for 4 years to run a sporting organisations website for free for them - I'm currently looking for a new host.
I'll probably go with GoDaddy - based on the fact I know a bit about them and think they'll keep the site up. Which is all that matters to me - I don't need the hassle the site being down will cause me from other people involved in the organisation. It'll cost a bit but I'm not paying.
If the OP is only doing a small site Virtual Free Servers might be worth a look - it's free to start but if the business takes off you can ramp it up - I just don't know enough about them to justify the paid version (my sites too large for free ) at this time and can't afford a suck it and see approach.0
