I was referring more to the members of the affected forums than anyone on here. From the comments some obviously didn't know what they were doing and ended up infected because of it.
It doesn't help when the site admins don't know what's going on. The Abe Forums admin "There is no threat to anyone's computer. The forum is only text and pictures." suggests he didn't have a clue or didn't want to admit it - that helps no-one.
I see what you mean! Actually there's quite a lot in those forums to feel dismayed about, not just from reading the 'technical' section.
Then again, I've found even otherwise competent people find it hard to understand what happens when a legitimate site is hacked in order to spread malware, e.g. I've had people argue with me that NoScript is useless if a trusted site gets hacked. This shows either that they don't know how to use NoScript properly or that they don't realise that the exploit kit is hosted on a third party site and will be treated as such by NoScript.0
