Do eBay care about fake goods?

Options
Was looking for a Man United shirt for a lad at work on eBay, came across one for £20.99, thought bargain. Watched the item as I was on my phone, checked on my comp when I got home.

In the description, it says the shirt is made in Thailand when infact the shirts and made in Indonesia. I've reported the item to eBay but the listing is still there!

Ebay and fake goods go hand in hand, they talk a good game but as there are millions fake listings all over the world on ebay, they would lose untold millions of dollars if the fakes were to be removed. So yes they care on the officiall side, but no they don't in the boardroom.
The fact that they won the huge case that the big companies brought against them ( I think Tiffiny was one of them ) gave them the green light not to care to much about it.
  • I've been trying to buy a new hoodie off Ebay this week, so far two I've been bidding on have been removed! I think they only look into the reported cases.
  • Ebay are very hot on fake items as they are legally liable from my understanding. The item may not have been removed yet but they will get round to it in time. Anything reported by a VERO holder is removed without question. It is very easy easy to lose an ebay account if you sell something thats not right.

I'm sure they'd like it if there were no fakes around, they probably lose more customers from people buying fakes than they earn on any revenue received from sellers selling them.
Also some sellers of fakes are left on to sell to Trading Standards officers and copyright owners and then get prosecuted which happens a fair amount.
Man Utd are pretty good at protecting their various trademarks, etc. Not saying that this particular item is genuine but it could be something more innocent, seller writing Thailand when they meant Indonesia or a genuine shirt manufactured in Thailand to be sold in another country.

Yes:) I buy reasonably high end goods and ebay is a good source generally. But obviously you have to be very careful as there are a lot of people selling fakes on it. It would be much easier for me to buy if i wasnt having to wade through piles of fake crap to find genuine items!
I know what i'm looking for and i have other people who very generously help authenticate items, however there are also a lot of naive people who seem to assume items are genuine without checking them. I've seen items go for hundreds of pounds that i know to be fake.

  • Probably better off with a call to the football club, A quick call/email from their legal department will soon see the auction
    end.

Might something in it for you also, Ive had a freebie for doing something similar in the past.

In a situation like this - I really don't care. If I wanted one, I would be happy to buy a well made fake. Rooney might have to pass on that new Benltey.

And the sellers investing money in genuine goods, supporting the country by paying taxes and employing staff? The damage caused by fake goods extends past the rights holders.

No offence meant here, but no real fan would ever buy a fake, if you cant afford a real one dont buy one at all, its not about funding Rooney, its about funding your club, the club you support and want to see playing for years, not having to stop because there is no money coming in.
