Bugs and Antivirus Software

The latest newsletter refers to computer viri as bugs: "All offer professional, legal software which crucially provides regular downloads for their "virus bank", the bit which tells the software about new bugs. Full reviews and links, plus malware, spyware and other bug prevention in the Free Antivirus guide. "

Please be aware that bugs are programming or design errors, not viri, worms, trojans, etc. Anti-virus software cannot prevent bugs or protect you from their effects. "Malware" is sufficient as a generic name.

Of course a bug may cause a vulnerability which can be exploited by malware, but even if the AV software detects or removes the malware, the bug has to be patched by the software vendor.
