Help! Dog wont stop barking in the garden

Hi!

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. We have an 18 month old Cavalier King Charles who is a little angel 80% of the time :) BUT every time we let him into the garden he barks like crazy for no reason at all. Its not because anything is distressing him it just seems like he likes the sound of his own voice. He doesnt bark at any other time, just when he's out in the garden.

Its gotten to the point where we dont like letting him out in the evenings to go to the toilet as we're worried he'll upset the nieghbours, they have young children and I'd hate to think he's waking them.

Does anyone know how we might be able to get him to stop?

    We have an eleven year old cavalier King Charles Spaniel who enjoys barking in the evenings. We stopped it this way;

Creep up behind them with a water pistol, squirt, then hide the pistol and turn your back so they don't know what's happened.

It works a treat and it's really amusing seeing the surprise on the adorable face:)
  • Brilliant! Will give that a go tonight....Although we once tried using a water pistol on him when he was nipping as a puppy and he thought it was a game so nipped more! Little Blighter!

Typical cavalier, they just want to have fun!

Dig that water pistol out again and make sure he doesn't link it with you-it's got to be a real surprise

They're really sharp, we cavalier owners have to be on our toes, don't we?

    Good luck!:)
  • Hi Havent got any advice but we have a ckc as well that does exactly the same thing, also he barks when we or he goes out etc hes lovely but can be a pain aswell, ours is 10 now so hes set in his ways, another ckc owner told us he would calm down but he shows no sign of that, anyway we love him :) hope you get help from somebody as yours is still young and willing to learn hopefully :D
  • Its just so frustrating, he's so good most of the time but the minute the back door opens its yap yap yap. He's always loved being outdoors so I think maybe he thinks thats his area of the house but I just wish he wouldnt be so vocal about it!
He does make up for it when he comes in and cuddles up on my lap though.... he's such a mummys boy!
    xx
  • Yep,, they are cute and crave for love, hope you enjoy him as much as we do ours, :)

There are some breeds of dogs that tend to be more yappy than others and they can make neighbours lives a misery.

Put some mustard on its teatowel holder and it will keep it otherwise occupied...

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

What about giving him something to play with when he is in the garden, a high value toy that he only gets when he is in the garden, or a stuffed kong or a cardboard box to tear apart (hide some treats inside).
  • I've got a Yorkie who is the same and every time she barks in the garden I shout 'No!' or bring her in and put her in her crate for five mins and then let her out again and slow she got that she shouldn't be barking. The obvious answer though is exercise. A lot of dogs bark form boredom so more exercise is the answer. I notice that if I haven't given my dog much exercise she barks more and when I walk my her she just runs a round the park barking like a nutter! More exercise and none of this happens. Good luck.
