For something a bit 'different' and potentially cheaper you might consider budget flying to Krakow (Poland) which gives access to Zakopane a nice, cheap resort in the Tatra mountains. Horse drawn sled taxis, interesting local culture, decent food and a nice atmosphere. Wherever you are going do your snow-report homework. Good luck.

Seconded. We did this last year and it was excellent.

  • Have you thought about a coach trip? if you are nuts about skiing like DH and me,it's fantastic.
You can pick up the coach (starts at Victoria) takes you to the alps overnight, straight to the slopes, picks you up about 6 and takes you to hotel, then 3 more days skiing,on last day you are picked up from slopes and head straight home, total cost about £100 each (not including lift passes)
I have been searching my brain for the name of the company we use,but I can't remember,if you google you will find something.

As far as places to stay in Zakopane....I just turned up in my car and found loads of people standing on the first main street with little signs letting you know they had space in their pension. Prices were negotiable as I recall and it was pretty cheap. I ended up staying with a really nice family who sat and laughed and drank vodka with me for most of the first night. My second night I didn't even make it back to the pension after getting talked into eating/drinking all night by some Poles I bumped into (I did settle down a bit after that). I realise that this is not of much practical help to you but its bought a wee smile to my face remembering it all! Good luck.
