cheap place to buy "dates"

I am just making my yearly batch of no cook apple, date and onion chutney, and have had trouble locating large bags of cheap dates for the recipe.
I usually buy l lb bags of dates from the baking section in the supermarket, but the size of bags seems to have gone down to about 3/4 of a pound and was fairly expensive. I think around £2 a bag.
As anyone come across a cheaper source? I know that they are not all that commonly used, but they are great in date and walnut loaf and the above mentioned chutney.
Thanks in advance!!

This isn't going to be that helpful to you now, but I always stock up on dried fruit and nuts for the whole year during Ramadan as my local supermarkets tend to have good offers then. The unhelpful bit being that it was in August :D.

Julian Graves will probably be cheaper than the supermarket if you have a branch near you. Also it's worth checking Holland and Barrett or a local health food shop.

    Hi karen,

As this is a shopping question rather than Old Style I've moved your thread over to the food shopping and groceries board to see if you can get more replies.

  • i bought 2x whitworths dates for £3.00 (375g pack) at tescos the other day - theres a promotion on whitworths so you don't just have to buy dates HTH
  • Home bargains have Whitworth's Dates for under £1 (sorry I can't remember the exact amount) They are usually cheaper than any of the supermarkets.
They also have Figs and Prunes, but these are about £1.29.
Hope that you have got one near where you live!
  • not one near me unfortunately
