These parts should last longer than 3000 miles, and it's probably unlikely that all 3 would go at the same time, but as they are electrical components, you never can tell.

So lets assume that these parts are ok,then I would start to check the items that I listed in my previous post,in the order suggested.

It's looking like the list of possibilities is getting shorter, and to be fair,if any of the listed items in my post prove to be at fault, then they are all easy enough for even the most non technically minded,to replace, thus saving more ££££.

The engine items which were replaced were: HT lead set, distributor cap and rotor arm. So Cumbrian Male was spot on!

    How much did he charge?
    Motor factors prices are around:
    distributor cap £15
    rotor arm £6
    HT leads £25-70
fitting is a 10 minute job.

HT leads should last longer than a year. Distributor and rotor arm are consumables but should last at least 10K before starting to lose performance. You can inspect them, since the metal parts arc and erode with use.

Damp is the enemy, so it'd be worth taking the HT leads off and spraying WD40 onto the metal.

I'd start with an inspection and clean up of the items.
Regarding the battery and alterator, most cars have a low charge warning light that will come on if the battery is running low. You can also have batteries tested free of charge by most motor factors.
    Happy chappy

It certainly sounds like an ignition system. Over time, ignition can deteriorate due to a combination of components working badly. So while replacing some items might temporarily resolve the issue the problem may reoccur when the other components get worse. In this case it could well be that, for example, your spark plugs need replacing.

MOT should be OK if the engine is warm and running well. Take it for a long drive beforehand.
