Unfortunately you shouldn't be reversing out onto a main road at all.

One of my pet hates is people who instead of reversing onto their drive when the roads are quieter in the evening, they reverse out onto the main road during peak rush hour traffic.
It's also far easier to manoeuvre a car around in a small space, when your reversing.
It's not rocket science really, pushing 2 tonnes of metal blindly onto the road, it's asking for trouble.
I found this on another forum, says it all really:
Even with a witness, the insurance is unlikely to take your side.
If it were me and I was 100% honestly sure the other driver was driving way too fast, then I'd say I was stationary.
I agree that it's easier to reverse on a drive and drive off, espesh on a busy road, but not always that simple in practice.
My in-laws live in a busy main road (40mph limit) which has 2 lanes per carriageway, but the left hand lane is often filled with park cars, including outside the in-laws house.
I always try and reverse on the drive out of habit - safer to get off later - but the amount of times ive indicated, stopped, and popped the car into reverse while no-one is behind me, then had some bright charlie come right up behind me so i cannot reverse is rediculous. often i pull in between parked cars to wait for a massive gap, but the road is a hill that people love to accelerate a lot up from the roundabout at the bottom.
i love the days when there is no car outside the house in the inside lane, and i can easily perform my manouvre from that lane without affecting traffic, however 9 times out of 10 im going to the house at a busy time and when the neighbours are all home!0 -
As a lorry driver I experienced this often. By far the worst was a rat run in Huddersfield where they would actually drive into the factory entrance to get past me.
.
You have to see it with your own mincers to believe it sometimes, my other favourite is after a manoeuver you find yourself on the wrong side of the road facing the traffic and trying to get going...if one of the numpties could see further than the bonnet mascot they'd realise that if they stopped 20 ft further back you'd be gone and the road cleared for everyone..including them...sheesh it ain't rocket science but you could be forgiven for thinking it is.0 -
It amazes me the idiot approach of drivers who think it is a good idea to drive in to the path of a reversing vehicle, when if it was going forwards they would not drive in front of it.
Fortunately, insurance companies also see it a sign of a bad driver and although liability may rest with the reversing driver culpability and stupidity often rest with the other and they mark premiums to show this increased accident risk of thinking you are right all the time so that's OK to cause an accident that you could avoid.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. The worst part is that the wife did it once. There was a left hand drive artic reversing up a road. Wife drove right up to it. I said "!!!!!! are you doing?" "Why?" was the response. "Its reversing" says I. "Really?" says the wife. "Yeah or didn't you notice the reversing lights, the hazard warning lights and the "Warning, this vehicle is reversing" buzzer? "No".......0
