What's worse is those who merrily drive along in the left-hand lane after Stockman's without realising it's actually the turn-off for Finaghy and Dunmurry and then only catch on at the last minute and almost cause an accident trying to get across to the main M1...

It's not like there are huge signs the whole way from Stockman's telling them this or anything...

Some speedometers in cars read high due to wear on tyres or because that is the way they are set at the factory (they err on the safe side in other words). It is very difficult to test this, but on occasions when I have gone past one of those signs which tell you your speed my speed was measured as much lower than what my speedometer was showing. In NI those speed signs are rare though. Maybe we need more of them.

    Not 20mph though!

As others have said, the limit is 50 until you come out the far side of the underpass and there are signs there stating as much. Anyone getting caught here is guilty as hell.
    Always overestimating...

Ah, but are those speed signs properly calibrated? As they're only there to warn you to slow down, I wouldn't be surprised if they were a few mph out. When the roadworks were on the M5 a few weeks ago, they had one of those "slow down, 50 mph limit" signs (or was it 40? Can't remember). It would light up even when doing well under that speed. My speedo may not be 100% accurate, but it's not THAT inaccurate.

The westlink out to the M1 has variable speed limits, you need to watch the gantries!

    Variable speed limits

This new system monitors the speed and flow of traffic on M1/ Westlink with equipment buried in the road. As the number of cars increases, the traffic control system will automatically adjust the speed limit accordingly.

It will display a mandatory speed limit on signs on the overhead gantries, along with information telling drivers why the speed limits are being implemented. It’s the first time that variable mandatory speed limits have been applied to a road in Northern Ireland.

bingo bango - you're talking about during the rush hour I guess, at all other times, you're not going to be stuck in any queue. I've seen a few of those people driving in the correct lane then having to jump out when they realise they're going down a slip road, numpties, there are different separating white lines for ages, plus the signs above. But you should be in that lane for the previous 3 or so miles...

Actually, I always stay in the middle lane until after the Finaghy Turn-off on the M1, as it can be difficult to get out of the left hand lane if you don't

And i can fully understand how people get confused, only in northern Ireland do you get motorways where the left hand lane turns into the slip road! On a motorway you should eb able to stay in the left hand the lane for the whole length of the motorway!

I borrowed a Sat Nav recently for a holiday and was surprised to discover the speedometer on my car reads about 5 mph less than that recorded by the Sat Nav. I'm not such a speed freak as I had thought I was! :rotfl:

What????? 50 for vans? It's 70 on the motorway.
Vans are restricted to 50mph on a single carriageway, 60 on a dual carriage way and 70 on motorway but its all to do with axle weight. A lot of vehicles now have limiters which restricts speed anything from 56mph to 70 mph.
Check Highway code for definitive answers on any individual type of vehicle.
