Don't worry Greg, there will be someone along soon to recommend a recovery route, but in the meantime, do not take any other photos, because you will overwrite the previous data, and it will not be recoverable.
• Thanks andygb.
Yes I agree with you not to take anymore photos.
I downloaded a program last night – took about 2 hours to scan and locate files on SD card – when I clicked the button to restore files it took to me to a page asking me to register and purchase software. Hopefully there is some free software which may do the trick.

One option

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

It has instructions etc

Note the save to location, probably best to use a different one to the card itself
• I cant how your going to get the pictures back :( I dont think a SD card work like a PC harddrive but i'll be keeping an eye on this thread as it would be good to know if it is poss :)

I recommend Piriform Recuva from the same people who make Ccleaner.

Pro photographers use both SD and CF, and would be mortified if they found that they could not retrieve deleted images.

I haven't used any of these yet but this is where I was told to go and look to recover files of an external hard drive I was having problems with. Just need the time to try.....

Hope it works

I will second that. Just been using it on my external hard drive that contained personal stuff going back to 2006. The other day I went to save some files from a customer's computer and it became corrupted somehow. I left Recuva running for 6 hours and it recovered about 95% of my files. For a free programme, it's brilliant.

I used this to recover some wedding photos which I deleted from my sd card by accident
Worked a treat and was free as well
