Aviva - No claims discount

I have 2 years no claims discount with my current car. I've decided to change car.. yet realized Aviva won't accept my no claims discount! They say "How many years no claims discount do you have relating to this vehicle?".

Is this true of all insurers, that as soon as you change your car your no claims discount is null and void? I've only ever owned one car for personal use. The difference with Aviva between 2 years NCD and 0 is one policy is double the price of the other!

Edit: Have I misinterpreted this? Does my NCD with my old car automatically 'relate to this vehicle' ? What the heck does 'relating to this vehicle' mean?

Comments

  • If you change car and stick with the same insurer until the end of the year (and are claims free), you will keep the NCD and earn that extra year.

If you cancel and go elsewhere, you can take your present NCD elsewhere, however no extra year will be added (as you haven't driven claims free for the full year)

If you have a second car / second policy, you can not use the same NCD on more than one vehicle.

Probably some exceptions out there though in regards to the above.

If i'm in the third year of my policy for my current car and have two proven years NCD with that car.. then change the policy to cover the new car (after selling my old car) will the 2 years NCD still apply to the policy when Aviva calculates the new monthly payments? (Taking into account they only care about [according to their own words] NCD relating to the car being insured?)

Edit: apologies, I saw you answered this with your first sentence above. I'm still confused why Aviva is the only insurer which says NCD's must be relating to the vehicle being insured. It could very well be a technicality to avoid paying out.. who cares what the industry definition is if what i'm answering in their form pertains only to the vehicle being insured?

All normal car insurance policies relate to coverring one vehicle and that vehicle's registration number will be recorded on the policy.

When you change your car, and swap the existing insurance policy to cover the new car (in place of the old car), then all the terms of the existing policy will transfer to the new car (subject to any amendments the insurer or you make at the time of the change of car).

So, the NCD is related to the car being insured and will transfer to the new car. Aviva are no different to all the other car insurance companies in this respect.
