Id appreciate some advise please
2 days ago i went to view a second hand car at a small dealers.
I left him a small deposit, as to allow him to get the car polished up before i collected it today and paid the outstanding balance.
When i got home after viewing the car, i did a on-line vehicle check, which showed up that the car was a cat c. There was no mention in the advert of this, nor did he inform me of this.
I spoke to him on the evening to ask why he had not informed me, and was told, he knew nothing of this and would look in to it.
When he got back to me, he said the previous owner had, had a crash and the drivers door and wing had been replaced. He also said he would have someone at a garage look at it.
I was then told that, that was all the damage that had been done.
So, we agreed a lower asking price, and i took the car home.
On closer inspection and also getting a mechanic friend to take a look, it appears that both doors, wings, bumper, lights, bonnet, front grill and reinforcer, have all been replaced, along with lots of welding has been done. The remote central locking is temperamental, the boot wont even lock and the stereo has had the wrong code tapped in that many times that it wont work!
Any advice would be helpful please
Thank you!

Don't buy it.

i think that negotiating the price of the vehicle to reflect the history of the vehicle will leave you in a poor position to re-negotiate now you have driven the car away0

Simple, don't buy it. If he really is a Trader he broke the rules initially by his misleading by ommission of the cat C status - which if he was a genuine Trader he would have positively checked and known.
Get your money back, there are plenty of other cars around, and lots of good cat c and d ones properly repaired you can save money on.0 -

He has already bought it. AND he knew it was a CAT C when he bought it.
On what basis would he be getting his money back?0 -
There is no advice to give. You renegotiated the price in light of the CAT C and accepted the deal. You didn't bother to get it inspected until after the event.
You are going to have a very hard fight on your hands now. It will be one persons word against anothers. As long as the repairs have been done to a good safe standard, I'd not be overly concerned. When you consider that many modern cars are just spot welded or even glued together, a lot of welding isn't actually detrimental as long as it has been done correctly. The panels must have been replaced to a good standard as you didn't notice.
The stereo code and boot lock have little to do with the accident damage.0 -

What Hammyman says is very true. You have painted yourself into a corner.
Why on earth didn't you get the car inspected BEFORE you took delivery?
I doubt very much that you have any comeback although you could try bringing a claim under the Sale of Goods Act via the local council for failing to mention the Cat C in the advertising.
Is it a garage or is the dealer just pretending to be a private seller with a few cars?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
thanks guys for the feedback.
Ive been to see him today. He is saying that as he has already sent off the log book, he doesnt know what to do now and will contact the DVLA. Ive already spoken with the DVLA, who have said if i put it in writing to them, they will take my name off or not change to my name.
The dealer is just a small dealer, selling from home. He seemed more concerned about how he wasnt going to be able to sell it someone else 'now' he knows it cat c!!
The car has been vic tested and passed, but as hes claiming he knows nothing about it, he has no paperwork to back up, what, when and where it was done, never mind who did it!0 -
How astonishingly helpful.
Op. Tell us what the car is, how much you paid and how long you plan to keep it. That info could be the deciding factor between taking it further or chalking it up to experience.
If you bother to read the OP's post 9 you'll see that he has indeed taken my advice and not bought it anymore.
On the other hand your advice sucks - he's well rid of that car!

Cheers for the update - glad it worked out for you.
.
But your title should say "Bought dodgy car from dealer." Sounds like he's been reasonable.Well as reasonable as anyone selling cars ever is...0
