Paypal help

Options
I bought something online for about £50 a few months back. The retailer has now emailed me, saying the original payment didn't go through, and are billing me again. I hadn't even noticed I hadn't been charged. The original payment now says "expired" next to it in my PayPal account.

Obviously I want to pay what I owe but I am cautious about re-sending payment in case this is some kind of scam and they will then go ahead and re-claim the FIRST payment as well. Hopefully if it says "expired" then there is no way they can now get the first payment. Is this correct?

Also, in the new payment request they've sent me (which I haven't yet paid as I'm rather confused and undecided) it just says "goods." They haven't entered a proper breakdown of what I bought. I'm worried it won't be a proper receipt or is some kind of scam. Should I demand that they itemize it?

Your help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Did you receive the goods?

Did the £50 ever go out of your PayPal account?

Or did it have another note or signal beside it?

If the seller did not receive clear payment they would have contacted you or opened a non-payment case.

And it's been a few months.

Don't pay any money. If money has left your PayPal account, you've paid.

If the seller cannot access the money then there's a problem at their end and it's their problem.

Examine your PayPal account and your eBay purchase history in 'archive'

    Thank you for your help.

I did receive the goods and never noticed that the payment had not been completed.

In my Paypal history it says for that transaction:

    "authorisation to (seller's name) expired"

in comparison to other transactions which all say:

    "payment to (seller's name) completed."

When I hover over the word "expired" with the mouse, Paypal comes up with this explanation:

"You have not completed your purchase and have not been charged for this item. Authorisation for this payment has expired. Contact the merchant for further details."

I have also checked my bank records online and cannot find any record of that Paypal transaction being deducted from my account, so it looks as though it's true that they haven't yet received my payment.

They are claiming in their email that it's due to a "technical error with Paypal" that my payment didn't get there, but based on what I found when Googling, "expired" implies it seems like they might have just been careless and not "claimed" the payment in time, and it was due to their own human error. It seems like they are lying and trying to blame their own mistake on Paypal.

Obviously I want to pay what I owe, otherwise techincally I would be a thief, so I don't agree with the comments on that page about not being billed again etc. I will pay it if I owe it and it's all legit, but I just don't get what's going on. Why are they claiming it was a technical error when it wasn't? Why haven't they itemised the second bill? It just seems fishy to me (i.e. they could re-claim the first payment and get paid twice, and I would have no proof that the second payment was meant to be for those specific goods, as they've set it up as just a "blank" payment stating "goods")

As far as the eBay transaction goes, it's now too late for them to re-invoice you.

You already accepted the goods months ago so your buyer's protection is not an issue at this stage and would be covered by 'chargeback' instead.

It's impossible for them to take the first payment as it's now expired.

But you're right that without a proper invoice, the second payment could be for anything.

If they are unable to itemise a bill for you or provide a way for you to pay for it as an eBay payment, it remains their problem that they will have to sort out.

You are willing to pay, but they need to satisfy you that the payment is for your eBay item.

And you've got to wonder why they wait so long for payment without sorting it out?
  • Thank you for your advice.

It was not something I bought on Ebay. I bought it from an online retailer.

So, to sum up: I should pay them but should request a proper invoice?

    You've summed it up perfectly!

  • Thank you for your help. I have emailed them asking them to cancel the new blank money request and send an itemised one instead.
  • You have done the right thing, paypal do often mess up a payment and as you are happy with the item. You are doing the right thing in paying for it. Nice to see honestyas the seller sent you the goods in good faith believing they were paid..
