What to do when your bag gets stolen?

Hiya

I've tried to find somewhere suitable to post this thread, hope this is the right place.

It would be useful I think to have some kind of emergencies folder to post threads like this.

Unfortunately I had my bag stolen last night, contained wallet, keys, minidisc etc. So far I have done the following, but is there anything else I should do?
  • Phoned round bank, credit cards, store cards and cancelled
  • Phoned police, reported
Next:
  • Phone bank, credit cards, store cards to order replacements
  • Phone loyalty cards etc to order replacements
  • Make a list of everything I remember having in my bag
  • Source old receipts of goods I had purchased to try to claim back through insurance
  • Book appointment at opticians, need new glasses!
  • Buy replacement items: wallet, umberella etc.
Do you think, for example, it would be useful to run a credit check in a couple of months to find out if anyone has tried to use my identity?

It's an expensive lesson, but I've now realised I need to have an emergency list of cards etc incase this happens again. Do other people keep similar 'emergency' lists?

Thanks lewt, made me smile :)

But that's exactly what I tried NOT to do!!

The only smally laugh I can get from this is that my rucksack looked really full of lovely things such as a laptop, but actually it was full of shopping I had bought to make some OS soup! So the thief went away with a bag full of onions and carrots, I bet they were disappointed :rotfl:

Keep an eye on the OS forum in case anyone posts "I've got a load of carrots and onions - what can I make with them?" :D

I would do the credit check in a couple of days.

Were they house keys? And was there anything in your bag with your address on? If so I would get the locks changed as well.

Sorry to hear it happened. Hope you get everything sorted out quickly.
Here I go again on my own....

If your driving licence went remember it has got your address on.

I was mugged just before Christmas but they didn't get my bag - I ended up sprawled all over the floor though.

I had forgotten I had my mate's digital camera in there because I was joking that all they would have got was £5.60 (it was the day before payday), 9 mince pies (taken from the pub where we'd had our works do), half a bottle of coca cola and a copy of the daily mail!!!
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

Thanks Becles and Emmylou. Luckily nothing had my address on so they won't be able to do much with my keys.

Sorry to read about you being mugged Emmylou. A colleague had work told me her story, on Christmas Eve they drove past her on a moped, dragged her and her bag along, got the bag. She had to change all the locks on her and b'friends house and didn't have any insurance to cover loss. It's scary how much stuff we carry around in our bags. If you add up new for old costs it can be over £1000 (with pdas, mobile, ipod etc).

I'll keep an eye out on the OS board ;)

Thanks moonrakerz, but if I don't have anything with my address on, that should be ok, shouldn't it? I'm not even registered as being at that address.

Oh, artic fox, I never thought of that with my blockbusters card. Thanks, I'll make sure I cancel that one. Good tip. Cheers.

Just phoned my bank, no other way to get money out until I get my new card. I guess that's one downside of online banking :( Maybe it is worth having another current account with 'emergency cash' with card left at home?

Gosh, I'm so sorry this happened! I've never had my bag stolen, and I dont know what I'd do if it was - I carry so much around with me.

Maybe this is a good idea, just incase something happens again in the future?
