Quots for new bathroom: good price vs trusted company
Comments

For medium size bathrooms I charge £2500-£3500 depending on what needs doing. That would be labour only. No fixtures and no fittings. So depending on where you live, it sound that the £3k quote will probably be by someone who knows what they are about. This does not mean they are any good, just that they are in the ball park so charge for a descent job.
Still get more quotes if you can, or better still get a recommendation.
Good luck.0 -
hi im a bathroom / kitchen fitter and have worked for various firms including a major company who i had better not mention..( think of a sea swiming creature similar to a porpoise ? got it ? ) and several others, i live in the n.west and the average charge from the former employer back in 2001 for the following was £3750... new bath. basin/pedastal.wc.pan & cistern.basic taps ( they were crap/awful cheapo nasty things ) 8.5kw elec shower, and tiles just to head height around bath and enough to create splashback behind basin.. ( in 2007 this company quoted my mates boss 35k for a bathroom..sales guy mustve rolled up & seen great big house and thought major £ commision..virtually had to kick him out the house close to midnight having been there since 6pm ) i did job for 2k and they supplied all materials ( 14k ) took 4 wks to complete..and they were extatic with results. ( later did all other 5 bathrooms in the house ) the later company's were charging anything from 5k upwards to supply and fit.. all depends on the products you want.
all i can say is that the most expensive rooms to refit / refurbish in any house are the kitchen & bathrooms. they will & do add value to a house and you have to get it right first time every time..!!!! it up and your looking at major expense to rectify.you & family friends want to walk in to the room and go " wow " & look forward to soaking in the tub relaxing in a fab outa this world space.
take your time, select the very best products you can afford ( search the web ,,tons of bathroom suppliers out there and masive savings to be made on products research it then research it again) and if someone comes reccomended then as a company you cant ask for any better advertisement.the more expensive company you mentioned seem happy to discuss and help you to turn your dream bathroom into reality..3K in london seems like a steal..talk to them some more..but take your time..dont be rushed...john..homestyle61@hotmail.com0 -
both sound too cheap to me to be honest - especially if any manner of supply is included.
the bit that put a smile on my face was the 'but it is understood in both cases that the quote is for the various items that we have requested'. - that really sounds like a recipe for disaster, unless your only at 'give me an idea stage'. you need a written list of inclusions and exclusions, and that quote needs to cover payment stages etc.
as for the £1000 quote, if you consider that a skip costs £150-200, add some petrol, tax etc, divide it by 2 people and unless they are going to complete it in 2-3 days it isnt going to be worth their while, and that will show in the job.0 -
Why not get another or even two more quotes?0
-
The simple answer is always get two or three quotes and ask for references and ring previous customers.0

i always go with someone who i know and will do a good job - whether theirs is the cheapest quote or not, i want the job done right first time0

Ask local friends, family, business associates for recommendations. The plumber you get by word-of-mouth will be better than the one you pull from the yellow pages......
FWIW, we've had bathroom, en-suite and downstairs WC all done recently. If the OH agrees, I'll post a cost breakdown, but I'm afraid even £3k sounds cheap to me....0
