PC startup problem?

Options
My daughter has a PC using Windows XP.
When she switched it on it got to the first screen where you click your username, then to the next screen where it says ‘loading your personal settings’.
Then it freezes on this screen, and nothing else happens.
Any idea’s guys? Apart from hitting it with a hammer.
Trying to learn something new every day.

Press the power button, as soon as the first screen appears, start tapping the F8 key until you get options, if last known good configuration is there, choose that, if not, choose safe mode. If it loads to safe mode, restart the PC

If it still will not load, start it again, tap F8 again, choose safe mode with command prompt, type this

    C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Then press enter, choose a restore point from a couple of days before now
  • Thanks Santer, I'll give it a try. I've promised to go to her house tomorrow.
I'll take a hammer.. just in case...

Sounds like an update has installed incorrectly or an existing driver has become corrupt.

Beyond the above, there is a repair install, though you will need the CD and just in case, a note of the serial key

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system.

The system repair function will remove any updates you have previously installed that are not included on the CD. When finished, you may have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update, because they are all replaced during repair. It may be necessary to reactivate your Windows XP as well.

    Hope it goes well
  • Following your advice, I used the Safe Mode option and it worked a treat.

Thanks once again for your help.
