toilet seat hinges rusting?

Is there a way to prevent this happening? We have an odd shaped loo (Ideal Standard Space) so a new seat is at least £60. The last one broke when the hinges snapped due to rusting. The new one is rusting merrily - although it is black rust not red? It has stained the seat underneath
We have an extractor and open the window but the condensation takes a while to clear when 3 successive people have a shower of a morning. I always give it a wipe over with loo roll when I'm in there but not everyone in my house is so conscientious!
any ideas?
thanks

Going to try the vaseline then - thanks shop-to-drop.
I also have fired off an email to Ideal Standard customer services - would have thought it should be designed to cope with a bit of condensation and poor aim...my cheapo £10 focus seat in the downstairs loo is all plastic and good as new after 6 years - and that room gets more visits!0 -
Cleaning products could be causing corrosion. Toilet cleaner contains acid to dissolve limescale and will react with the metal producing a black colour. Bleach will also corrode the metal. Rinse the hinges with water after cleaning.
If you get a new one try using silicone sealant in the holes in the toilet when fitting to prevent liquid sitting in the hole next to the hinge.0 -
Thanks for that useful info Tim - I wondered why it was black
