Maybe best to stop using dodgy looking cash machines in dodgy looking areas. I know any machine could be affected by fraud but I still limit which ATMs I use. I have a few to choose from mind you.

They rely on the smug and ignorant, who assume it only happens to idiots or in dodgy places!

Yehhhssss. Well if 'they' are prepared to pounce and kill members of the public for a few quid and a mobile phone, why would they go to all the trouble of acquiring/manufacturing a special plastic doodah that exactly fitted a particular cash machine? Why not just do that anyway?

Of course, there was very likely a 'gang' keeping watch over the ATM in question, waiting until the time was right to approach the ATM themselves and retrieve the cash. And as soon as they realised that they had been rumbled, they scarpered PDQ. Because the big advantage of this sort of caper is that none of your victims can ID you, so challenging someone who has negated your little scam is most certainly not part of the plan.
