Using compatible toner cartridges in my colour laser printer - is it OK?

I bought a Brother HL-3040 and am a tad annoyed as I asked what cartridges it took and was shown (and sold) a spare black cartridge at £40, the colours I was shown were around the same for 1400 page life. Not too bad, I do need colour cartridges for my logo - but it turned out to be the wrong cartridges and the ones I actually need are around £75 each - and I need 4 and they are all pretty much run out. I had factored the cost of the cartridges when I bought the printer but the toners are actually double the price.
I've been looking around and have found compatibles at £40 each (or thereabouts) on eBay, I'll be honest, I've never used them before in my laser printers and am worried about the quality and damaging the printer. Are there issues with using them in a colour laser printer?

It really isnt materially different from InkJet ones.... most are ok but you will occasionally get a duff one. My printer lasted for years running on ultra budget generics but then evidently got a bad one as initially colours were well out and then it gradually stopped printing properly.0

I would look at as many prices as you can and go for something in the middle to high end of those
With inkjet cartridges you are mainly safe if the ink used is produced in the USA, not sure if the same applies to toner inks0 -

Thanks for the advice, I managed to get 3 brand new original ones for £30 each on eBay - and they are just down the road so collecting them tonight. Usually they are £75 so am well pleased. I will bare this in mind for the future though.0
