Need to cancel o2 Contract - maternity leave

People make choices. Some of those choices, e.g. having children, are likely to put them in a poorer financial situation. At the end of the day, it's still your choice. Sorry to be unsympathetic but I don't see why o2 should let you off purely because you've decided to have kids."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

They can have it back for all i care, i just need the money for my child! they could at least cut my bills right down to the lowest of the low tarrif (not an iphone tarrif) but they only offering £4 off! I am disgusted!
I'm sorry if I sound unsympathetic, but what do you expect them to do? You signed up for a 24 month contract. It's not their fault that you are now on maternity leave and can't afford to pay the bill.
Take the £4 off, sell the phone and put the proceeds towards the contract. Be thankful you only have 6 months to go.0 -

Any insurance would most likely cover the cost of repair or replacement of the phone, and not the price of the contract. All trying to defraud the insurance company would acheive is more inconvenience by not having a phone.0

Pay what you agreed to in the contract. It's not O2's fault you decided you subsequently thought it was a good idea to be humped.0

Was the phone bought with insurance? If so check the policy as my partner took insurance out on his last contract phone and paid a little bit extra (£1 per month extra) to be able to cancel the contract early. His contract was with o2 and he took an 18 month contract out kept it for 9 months and cancelled, he simply had to pay the excess which cost £15 and return the handset.0

Not sure about O2 but I know with a 24 mth contract with Vodafone you can "upgrade" within the last 6 months of the contract. If you can do this with O2 can you "upgrade" to the most basic phone/tarrif they do, or even a sim only deal and pick up a cheap phone?
Ok you are then tied into another contract but might be a solution (and then you can sell the phone on ebay as others have suggested)0 -

I'll have to remember that when I renew, that would be quite handy.
There's not much else to say, though. Phone contracts are almost impossible to get out of, especially iPhone contracts. There's a reason the cashback sites like Quidco regularly have offers on contracts from different providers, yet almost always excluding iPhones. Paying the remainder (with a small reduction in price) to get out of the contract is quite common. If you're that desperate for the money, take the £4, grab a basic £20 phone off of Ebay and sell the phone. After 6 months you'll be able to 'upgrade' to a cheaper contract (negotiate them down over the phone).
Or take bowdengr's advice, which would work too.0 -
Yeah it was a great addition to the policy as when I renew my contract with tmob I always get an offer of a second contract dirt cheap so the cancellation came in handy
saved £30 a month when we got rid of the other one!
It was with geek squad insurance but im sure others do it ive looked at their site and it now says phone must come from carphone warehouse, and prices have gone up since we did it.0 -
The only other thing I can think of is potentially "upgrading" (downgrading in this case) early to a non-iPhone tariff. I know that Vodafone now let you upgrade something like 150 days early for a £55 charge, and it doesn't have to be to same tariff. i.e. upgrade to a Nokia 3310 for £5 a month and take the hit of the early upgrade charge? I don't know if O2 allow this though.Littleoldme wrote: »Not sure about O2 but I know with a 24 mth contract with Vodafone you can "upgrade" within the last 6 months of the contract.
