The Music Magpie

Hi guys.

I'm brand new here but I wanted to ask a quick question about Music Magpie. I know they appear in the Up Your Income guides here on MSE but I was wondering if anyone had their own experience with them?

I've got quite a few DVDs that I've bought over the years I want to cut down on (and get some cash back for), but a lot of them were originally purchased pretty cheap anyway so I don't think eBay would be best for me.

Anyway, I'm open to any ideas! Thanks :)

  • Hi,

I have used them quite recently and was paid promptly. The main downside is that they give very little per DVD - typically 30p to 40p - so if you need the money or the space I would say go ahead but otherwise have a think about how you might get more for them elsewhere.

    Hope this helps!
  • I sent 260 items to them last week which were picked up free by courier. They seem ok so far. I have received an email from them to confirm receipt and they say the cheque will be issued in the next 7 days.

Most DVDs were only fetching 30p though.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I probably should have said that the biggest reason I want to get rid of these DVDs is for space - extra money is good of course but because I'm looking to get rid of about 50-60 items I don't want to have to mess around with another more time consuming method :)

You'll tend to find that DVD's aren't really worth that much 2nd hand these days. A lot of the ones they offer 30p for can usually be had for 1p + postage on Amazon, so a fair offer in my opinion, considering they cover postage and don't charge fees.

I had 100 old DVDs sitting in a box that I wanted to get rid of last year so I spent half a day listing them all on ebay (very easy, you just type in the bar code number and the details appear) and then another half a day putting them all in envelopes at the end of the the auction. I got £500 in total for them, which pretty much covered Christmas!

As others have pointed out MM had offered me only pennies for them. Some Disney and other popular ones went for £15 each on ebay.

I guess it depends if you can be bothered with the ebay hassle:rotfl:

anna-marie - You said 300 DVD's originally and then you edited it to 100.

I seriously doubt you'd get £5 each for 2nd hand DVD's, whereas £1.67 each seems more reasonable.

    So which is it?

I think ebay is the best bet, once you get the handle of things it takes not time at all.
I sold an old meatloaf CD few weeks back, i started the bidding at 49p......sold it for £12.99

I have sold 2nd hand DVD's up as high as £13 on ebay. You just never know what will sell.

  • https://www.cex.co.uk is a good one for selling dvd's and games. They quote you a price, you add it to your basket and then send them freepost (you have to look for the freepost address in their FAQ's otherwise they just give you a normal address) My brother sent them 3 games a few weeks ago and got nearly £30 for them, it took about a week after they had arrived for the money to be added into paypal.

Yes some will be £13, and others will be 1p. Some won't even sell, costing you listing fees.

The key word is average. An average over 100 random DVD's would be much closer to £1.67, not £5.
