Cheap/Free bed guard for toddlers- money saving tip

Hi all,

Thought I would share a money saving tip. We recently moved our two year old from his cot to a "big boy bed" (junior bed) after two nights of finding him asleep on the floor, despite rails around the top part of the bed. I came up with a genius (even if I do say so myself) idea.

I put a length of foam pipe lagging down the length of the bed underneath his fitted sheet. He's stayed in bed ever since. I got a piece free from the plumber as he was here doing some work but it's only a couple of pounds.

Hope this helps someone :)

  • I use foam pipe lagging on the steps of my son's cabin bed - much kinder to his feet than the metal steps! Mine wasn't free, though - it cost 77p from B&Q, but it did cover all three steps.

Great idea EGW:). I used a rolled up towel for the same purpose many years ago - not my tip though, read it somewhere!

How big is the lagging? What diameter do you need to stop them falling out? DD is going into a single bed in a couple of weeks and I foresee her falling out a lot!

  • Sorry for late reply, I'd say it is about 2 inches but haven't measured! hope it works for you, rolled up towel sounds good too! :)
  • I have this which is obviously more expensive than what you are talking about but it may give you an idea for a home made one. I loved this so much I bought a 2nd one for my youngest ready for when she went into a bed.

When we bought the new single sized bed for our toddler, we put the old cot mattress on the floor in case she fell out. I figured we won't use it for another baby and we had no other use for it.

We also did the pipe lagging underneath the sheet, I did read about using a swim noodle (one of those long foam tubes that kids use in the pool) but I couldn't find one, so we used the new pipe lagging that we had left over from something else. Think ours was about 2 inch diameter, but if I was buying one, I'd go for bigger.

A few months on, we've removed the mattress and the lagging and she sleeps well in a single bed.
  • Osian, great minds! I was sure someone else must have had this idea, amazon products looks good too and not too pricey :)
