Scanner suitable for 35mm slides

I've come across literally thousands of slides belonging to OH's parents. lots of family history in there and I'd ideally like to put the best on CD but my scanner is too old and cant scan slides or negatives. can anyone suggest a reasonably priced scanner that would be able to scan slides and negatives to allow me to upload these to my pc? Don't wan't to spend a fortune as can't see that once this lot are dealt with I'd need to use the facility again as all our cameras are digital. thanks.

From memory, slide scanners used to be quite a bit more expensive than normal flatbed scanners.

You could try and find a company to do it for you if you're not going to use it in the future.

Do a search for a Plustek 7200 in Google.

Gets a very good review on several sites.

I purchased one just before Christmas (Cheapest place was actually Jessops at £120.00) to scan in all of the old 35mm slides (Most are over 35 years old) and it worked extremly well.

I have also seen the mgoing for nearl new price on Ebay, so you could sell it out when you have finished with it.

I originally got from eBay a Pacific Image PrimeFilm 3650u 35mm Film Scanner (3600x3600, USB 2.0, PC/Mac). This was OK. It scans one slide at a time. I was using it under MacOS9 and I'm not sure if drivers are available fpr MacOSX. Obviously I can't comment on Windows drivers.

Then I bought an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo from eBay. This cost twice as much and is obviously much larger. However, it comes with an 8 slide "mask" so you can chuck 8 x 35mm slides in it, set it to scan, then leave it to it. It (the Mac software) does a good job of recognising the slides.

    I wrote a review: http://www.!!!!!!.uk/epson.htm

Again I have no idea whether the Windows software is as good. But the scanner is excellent.
