Thanks for all the replies so far. Yeah, my main concern is that the buyer either won't agree to a mutual or will pay with paypal as soon as I try to open a NPB as from the emails the buyer sent, his main concern is getting a NPB strike.

However, I stand by the fact that I would NEVER accept paypal for an item that was being collected and it's totally unreasonable for ebay/paypal to try to enforce this.

I can't afford to swallow the fees because they're about £27 but I'm thinking that the buyer never intended to collect in the first place (who in their right mind would drive 200 miles to collect a £300 pc?)

It's a tricky one. If you start a dispute, then if he pays by paypal, can you just refund him, or would it close the case by him paying?

Maybe you could call or live chat to ebay and explain, see what they suggest?

As soon as he pays by PayPal it would close the case so although I can refund him, I'll still be left with the FVF's.

I could always insist on him collecting if he does pay by paypal in the hope that he realises 200 miles here and 200 miles back is too far in which case he will want a refund.

How about (and not sure if this would work) but say he pays by paypal and collects the PC. Could I then send him a receipt by recorded delivery and use that tracking number to prove postage?
  • i recently sold laptops on ebay buyer paid by paypal and collected. a few days later the transactions were disputed and i now have to pay paypal back £800 which i dont have, this could potentially be a scam so steer clear. just politely tell the buyer to read paypal rules because you will not be covered if they pay via paypal and then collect. also i belived i read before that also a bank transfer can also be reversed, you should kindly ask the buyer to pay by cash on collection or you will have no other option than to cancel the transaction and as long as he accepts you will then get the final value fee back. i have had weeks and weeks of fighting with paypal over my transactions because i was wrongly advised so i personally would steer well clear and just remember to put on future auctions cash on collection just to cover yourself. good luck hope you get it sorted.

Have you been on live chat explaining that the buyer wants you to post an item that was listed as collection only?
You may get someone sensible who will agree to cancel the transaction.

If you insist on collection, he could claim non receipt, then neg you and leave you with the fees. Doesn't matter how you listed it. Sending a receipt wouldn't work either.
Yuo should have listed it with postage in the first place, it's a pc not a grand piano.
You're stuck I'm afraid. We all agree ebay/paypal do not have this right. But it's the way it is.

I think you need to read the rest of the thread as you potentially will have problems in the future if you think putting 'cash on collection' in your auction is enough. You've already been targetted by a scammer once, don't roll over and let another scammer pick you off again.

The OP here is well aware of the paypal on collection scam and sensibly is asking how to get out of an almost imposisble situation now.

Have you ever been reported or listing pulled though?

I thought mentioning cash in the listing was not allowed, and that ebay could pull the listing?

Never because eBay do allow you to ask for it.

I know people always say you can't ask for it but on eBay's help pages http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/pay/accepted-payment-methods.html they give you the right to request payment on collection and that you can specify cash.
You'll notice as well that with 'payment on collection' they don't specify that you must offer Paypal - just that you have to be clear about which you'll accept.

So now I quote eBay's own rules, to make sure that I stay in line with what I'm allowed to offer.

again... it's what i do and not advice for others to follow.
