Working week reduced to 3 days

Hi folks,

I am currently facing the real prospect of my working week being reduced from five days to three. As many may I appreciate, I simply won't be able to survive on such a drastic reduction of income for too long.

Am I eligible for any sort of benefit/credit to top up my dwindling wages?

For the record, I will be working 24 hours a week; currently living on my own.

Any/all help is much appreciated.

Regards,

Tomo

It depends on your salary and how old you are. If your under 25, you won't be entitled to anything.
  • I think we will need to know your income now and for the 3 day week to be able to help you

I can't help with the benefit question but on the Debt-Free Wannabe board there's lots of lovely people who may be able to suggest ways to reduce your outgoings.

Post your SOA (Statement of Affairs) on there - use this link for the template:

    Good luck
  • Many thanks for the replies thus far. I currently earn £6.80 per hour plus a 20% shift premium. i.e c £8.16 before stoppages. Doing a few rough calculations: 24 hrs per week x £8.16 = £195 before stoppages.

So, I am guessing that I will be taking home in the region of £650 per month. Roughly my outgoings before food!

*Pollycat, thank you for the link. I don't wish to sound ungrateful or that my outgoings can't possibly be reduced, however, I have spent the last few days cutting back on absolutely everything that I could..i.e reducing mobile phone, tv etc. The bulk of my outgoings is Mortgage/ car insurance/ council tax etc. with no room to reduce these.

Again, much appreciated for the time / help .

    Ps - I am 41

Have you put your details into the benefits calculators on direct.gov and turn2us? They'll give you a rough idea of what you can claim.

Are you going to be looking for extra work?
  • Thank you for those links. After inputting all of the required criteria, it appears I am eligible for the mighty sum of £0.00.
    I shall spend it wisely.

With regards to looking for work, it appears on the above basis that I have little or no option but to at least try and supplement my income from somewhere. Problem is - as I am acutely aware - is that any sort of work is no longer readily available. However, one shall endeavour to try and find something.

As always, your help is appreciated.
