Help with Comet/Beko warranty rights

Options
We bought an integrated Beko dishwasher direct from Comet, and had it fitted by an independent kitchen fitter as part of a new kitchen. After four months, the door mechanism failed making it unusable. It also seems to have delaminated the worktop above it - I guess there must have been leaking steam for a while before the complete failure.

Phoned Comet Onecall, who gave us a "definite" appointment two weeks in the future when it would be fixed. Two days beforehand they phoned to say they didn't have the right part, and rearranged for two weeks later. Two weeks later, engineer turned up but said (1) he doesn't have the right part and (2) he is not allowed to get the dishwasher OUT to fix it - apparently we have to arrange for unfitting and refitting, although they didn't mention this in advance. So we want to know:

(1) Can they really make us bear the cost of removing and refitting an integrated appliance to fix a warranty fault in an integrated appliance?

(2) If this drags on, at what point can we legitimately get it fixed by an independent repairman (we know a very good one!) and pursue Comet for the cost (through county court if necessary)?

(3) Any chance we can pursue them for the damage to the work-surface?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Probably - they didn't fit it, either.

The warranty on a car part wouldn't cover the cost of replacement labour, for example.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • When the dishwasher was fitted, was there any protection plate or sealant applied to the underside of the worktop above it?

Most dishwashers will emit a fair amount of steam when first opened and it's for this reason that the installer should have protected the worktop.
Some dishwashers will come with a plate that is screwed to the worktop, but if they don't supply one, a couple of coats of a waterproofer such as unibond will do the job.
