Ford extended Mondeo warranty. Is it worth the money?

I have a face lifted 2L Mondeo diesel with a powershift gearbox. By the time the car is a year old next month the car will have done just 7,000 miles.

Now the question is do I spend £570 extending the Ford warranty by an additional 2 years to 5 years or not? I have to make my mind up before the car is a year old to extend the warranty with Ford.

So far the car has been faultless and has never been back to the garage since the day I picked it up. By the time the car is 5 years old it should have done around 35,000 miles. Part of me is saying £570 pays piece of mind while the other part is saying I have bought a reliable gem and I am throwing away £570.

Entering the cars details for a 3 year old Mondeo with Warranty Direct costs £417 for the first year alone. It makes the Ford offer seem like a bargin

At just 7,000 miles a year you are in the territory of slowly killing a modern diesel car due to lack of use.

The £570 could save you major expense once the EGR, turbo and ancilliary systems start being affected by carbon build up. Been there done that, never again and I was doing 15-18,000 a year in a diesel auto, but a lot of it at lower speeds.
  • Coverage depends on what you think might go wrong. I had (up until recently) a 3 year warranty on my car and when I purchased it decided not to go for the 4th and 5th year. I got some value out of the 3 years, as the heated windscreen needed replacing and also the water pump.

But the warranty doesn't cover everything - trim and water ingress after the first year aren't covered - so I still ended up spending £70 to fix trim, a further £150 on a new headlight unit/fitting and I will probably have to spend a bit more fixing a rubber seal on the drivers door.

As a rule of thumb the manufacturers warranties tend to be worth going for but third party warranties are not.

Since you have one of the fancy new automatic gearboxes I'd consider extending it if you plan to keep the car that long.

Remember that the Sales of Goods Act covers you for up to 6 years, depending on the price and nature of any item going wrong.

If your clutch went after 20k miles, Ford would probably be obliged to cover at least 50-75% of the cost.

Are your 7,000 miles a year mostly motorway?

But the reality is a lot harder when it comes to the SOGA, there is no guarantee Ford would contribute anything. OP have a look on Ford websites to see what other owners think about the warranty. 285 per year isn't too bad, you'd probably get through that with just a single claim.

+1 for the above especially doing low mileage. It won't be kind on the DPF.

The car spends most of the week just sitting on the drive, as I drive a van for work while the wife walks. Yes the car does do short trips but in the main the car is used for mixed driving. Much of the mileage has been done going away on UK holidays or visiting relations.

One problem with a Ford Warranty is that you will normally have to have it serviced at the Ford Garage....and they are not the cheapest

For my Mondeo, my local garage is £2 cheaper than the main dealer however they don't replace some parts that should be done and do replace others that don't need to be done but most importantly, they don't stamp the bodywork inspection which means that if I get rust in the panels in the first 10 years of the cars life, I cannot make a claim on the anti-corrosion warranty.
