Before my move

As you may know by now I'm moving into my new house on Friday :j should I be signing up with companies now for my gas, electric, tele, phone etc or will everything just stay the same when I move in, in that I use the same companies the old occupants use and then I can change?

Thanks in advance.

i suspect you have to do it when you get there in terms of meter readings etc

Phone, internet etc I guess you can sort now :)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • We done it all when we moved. Lucky there was a old bill when we got in, so we just phoned them up and said new owners, they setup a new contract and sent a final bill to the old owners. It was very simple.

I took a meter reading of the gas and electric before i called and let them know we've not used any, so that was the starting point for us.

I Just set it up with the old company to get it sorted, then i looked about when we were settled, turns out they were the cheapest anyway.

When we moved, BT needed 5 working days notice to set up telephone/broadband etc so you would need to sort that out asap unless you are not particularly bothered when it gets put on.

You can find out who your gas and electric companies are that supply your new house by calling Transco 0870 608 1524 (Gas) and for Electricity supplier it depends where in the country you are on who you call to find it out. Call the suppliers and let them know when you are moving in and they will telly ou what to do and when. For us we had a prepay meter and had to get these reset for us before using them so had to get theat done before we actually moved in.

Find out your water company and also let them know when you will be moving in, most water companies now need to fit a mater in properties that have just changed hands so that will need to be sorted asap.

Also let the council know when you will be moving in so they can bill you for council tax appropriately and not have to backdate it and make the payments higher or need to pay in a lump sum, messing up any budget you may have set up for bills etc.
  • Thank you all very much for that information, looks like I'm going to be busy this week :)
  • NTL is done so hopefully I'll get £27 from quidco as well :)
