What will you mainly use it for? Just word processing, music, internet, or games, etc too?

For £500 you should have quite a good selection to choose from.

This is a very good deal and from a very good make:

    Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop:

    - Intel Core Duo (one of the best processors currently available)
    - 512mb Ram (decent amount)
    - 60GB Hard Drive (good size for the price)
    - 15.4" Widescreen
    - Wireless Network
    - Windows XP Professional
    - DVDRW for backups, etc

    :)

For £46 more (but out of your budget) you can get the latest processor (Core 2 Duo) and double the storage space (120GB) plus Windows Media Center with a free upgrade for Windows Vista Premium (worth around £200), link is here if interested:

    The Great Declutter Challenge - £876 :)

  • I think that's the laptop I have, but with a 30GB harddrive. I paid £1200 for it three years ago though! Runs well but no wireless card so check that if you need one. Good luck with the search.
  • Dell are usually quite good, especially of they are running any special offers

If you don't need anything with any power (games/graphics/compiling lots of code), I can recommend the acer lappy I just got. Is just short of £400 on ebuyer, but is £373 on tesco (plus clubcard points).

It's got widescreen 14" screen, 512mb ram (the only thing that lets it down), 60gb hard drive, dvd writer, wifi, usb2, all the usual bits and bobs.
Has media center edition (good for music/vids) and an upgrade voucher to vista home premium.

If you don't need any more power, I'd get one of those and drink the spare £100.

    :)

check out the grabbit while you can board for 0-day laptop offers, they are usually a bargain. Dell are usually the best place to go, and if you go through https://www.quidco.co.uk you usually get another £20 off. Also I recommend to most people whether they really need a laptop over a desktop as most don't, they are much more likely to be stolen and the number of people I know who buy a laptop and never take it out their room never mind the house, what a waste of money!
Desktops far cheaper for the performance, and are very tiny these days.

    Good Luck

    HOLD OFF!

wait until February - Vista will be out then, right now a lot of companies are offering Vista upgrades but you often have to pay a handling fee and send off bits of paperwork which is a real hassle. Come February new laptops will start coming preloaded with Vista.

I'd recommend Acer - got mine from Tesco about 18 months ago for under £500 - still works a charm for all my uni needs (including java programming, flash etc). Came with 256mb ram but it was easy to upgrade.
  • Thanks for that
