Would you tell an employer you're LOOKING to leave?

Maybe not as crazy as it sounds. Here's my thoughts:
The job i'm in i don't mind too much. Ok it's not the most taxing of jobs & therefore i work on auto-pilot. Many people tell me that i'm better than the job (based on school grades usually this comment comes from), but i don't generally mind it. There are a few issues-
* never knowing when you're going to finish. Could be 5:30pm, could be 7:30pm. As a result, you can never plan anything after work unless you're planning something about 9pm. I can live with this though.
* My supervisor - which is the reason.
This man is an idiot. He is disliked throughout the company. He's the chap i was on about with the blowing smoke in my face thread recently. The only people who seem to back him are the bosses.
He is incredibly lazy, i mean ohhhhh so lazy!!!! He had offer of another job & i asked why he didn't take it. He mumbled because he'd have to do some work - so he knows he's lazy, but that was the first time he'd ever admitted it. You couldn't begin to grasp how lazy this man is.
But he's crafty!!
Soon as the bosses are on the scene, he's the hardest worker you ever did lay eyes on.
Not only is he lazy, but he's so incredibly childish ... in his 40s.
I was preparing some goods for delivery once & was wrapping them as the sky looked bad & the goods couldn't get wet. He drives up alongside & instead of using his tongue & conversating like a normal person, he looks up to the sky, looks at the plastic covering i had, looks up to the sky, plastic covering, looks at me, up to sky, plastic covering.
Waiting for me to say something. I didn't, i carried on.
Eventually he makes use of his tongue & says it's not going to rain, why am i using the sheeting. I explain the big black clouds suggest it could be raining any minute. He gets the condescending tone going full flow & eventually tells me not to use it.
5 minutes later once the goods are on the wagon, guess what happened. Yes, i don't even need to tell you.
But it's the way he goes about things which wind people up.
When he gets an audience (outside delivery drivers, customers etc), he'll bark at members of staff to flex his authority-pecs. Looks at me, aren't i the big man, are you impressed?!
I've lost count of the numbers of staff who've left already because of him, his laziness & his attitude.
He lies about other staff also - to the boss. He told the boss i was lazy & was palming work off on to other people. I told others when i found this out & they damn near choked.
I was fuming when i found out. I told him to take me on when it comes to laziness, and i will gather all my witnesses, he can gather any that he can pay off & we will see whos story stands up at the end of the day!
He didn't take it any further.
The childish attitude on this man is the main one. It's really unnecessary. The episode with the plastic sheeting is just the tip of the iceberg really.
I've spoken to him about his attitude before & how there's no need to speak to adults like children the way he does. Trying to make them feel worse than the dirt you just stepped in.
He said there is need - if people make mistakes, then he has every right to speak to them like that & he will carry on.
There's a chap at our place who carries a hell of a lot of weight it seems too - even he's been in the boss's ear about this man.
This supervisor was off work for a week, i stepped into his shoes, everything ran like clockwork (i'm not being big headed here btw) - so people all went to the boss's & told them of the change. Things running more efficient, THE ATMOSPHERE BEING BETTER. What happened? Nothing. Other than when this man returned, he blamed me for organizing everyone to go against him.
I've been asked by the HR lady how everything was a few months ago. I told her not the best, other than the week he was off was the first time i've enjoyed coming to work for years & i told her all about his attitude & laziness.
Nothing done.
If so many people are against this man & he's so lazy, why is there no investigation into him you ask?
Because he's the worlds biggest brown noser. It's so bad it makes you sick. He'll fall totally foul of health & safety law in front of the boss, just to try and please the boss. The things he's been caught doing & saying takes brown nosing to an all new level. He's the biggest yes man ever.
So that's why the boss loves him - he'll never find another one like him.
So, i have courses & qualifications that my employer has put me through, but they're in my file & i don't know what qualifications they are - therefore can't put them on any CV until i see them, which i'd need to ask for.
When asking, i'd also be asked why i want to see them which could then get onto the topic of WHY i'm looking for work elsewhere.
So question is, based on this knowledge, would you tell your employer you're looking at leaving, or would you just leave & only tell them when you've got a start date at another job?

there is one in every workplace.
Better to keep head down, get a new job, and then leave them to it!0 -
think if you mention it it could give them a reason to give you the bootReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0

Really?!
Some people are idiots. It is a fact of life. There's nothing you can do and you have nothing to gain by making a point. Keep up your high standard of morals, keep your job and keep looking for another...MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j0 -
Thanks for the advice.
I'd like to think a change could be made & everything would work out fine for all involved (except this idiot), but i guess that's fairytale stuff.
Thanks for the advice though.0 -
Er, whyever don't you have the details of your qualifications? You should have the original certificates etc and HR should keep copies. You need to get this information if you plan to ever apply for another job, or a college course, or anything!! I wouldn't be entrusting it to an employer who I might want to leave, or who could make me redundant, lose it, etc - it's far too important!
I would get hold of this information ASAP - tell HR you are thinking about expanding your skills and want to check what you've already done, or some excuse or other. Get the original certificates if you can and if not make sure you get photocopies. In future make sure you keep your own notes of the training you've done - I just keep a version of my CV and add each course in there as they happen. I also keep a file with plastic pockets for paper copies - then it's all in one place so very easy to check or take into agency/ new job/ anywhere that needs to see the originals. Maybe I am a bit obsessive on this but I think you're a little too far the other way!
BTW I wouldn't tell them a thing, I'd just start looking.
Good luck

Has anyone actually taken out a grievance? The HR bod probably asked because without it, nobody can do anything.
Ask this nice HR bod if you can have a copy of your certs as you are thinking of doing an evening course in [anything] and you need to list all your quals. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
The short answer is no.
Some people drop hints as the last post suggests.
Another hint-dropping method is to take a half day off in the afternoon and in the morning come in in your interview suit.
But best advice as most people have given is to bite your lip and look for another job.0 -
Depending on the qualification, the certificates are your property and you should hold the original. Even if the employer paid for the course, booked you on the course and it was crucial for you job, the certificate is your evidence of completion and achievement. You could, if they really are that bad, contact the awarding body and pay for a replacement certificate, depending on the awarding body, it will be usually about £15 for a replacement. A side note though, you must know what course you did, especially if an exam or assessment was involved, you were there!0

Tell them you are thinking about part time study and want a copy of what you have for the application. Ask HR, not the boss.Debt free 4th April 2007.
