Out of date currency

Went to Post Office today to change some currency which had been hanging around the house for a few years, after a couple of business trips of OH, and was disgusted to find that some of it was no longer legal tender.
It was about $60 US and also about 300 Malaysian RM.
Is there anything I can do about this, or is the money just gone? It's not a question that the currency has changed (eg from francs to euros) just that the look of the notes has altered (eg from old fivers to new ones) though to be honest I couldn't tell the difference between the old and the new ones.

Not sure what you can do about it in this country.
You can definitely change it to current notes in banks in the country concerned, so maybe if that country has a bank of USA or Bank of Malyasia in the UK you could do the same thing here.0 -
All USD, however old, is legal tender but the older notes are harder to exchange outside of the US because they were easily forged0
