Benefits for depressed 20 year old

Evening all!

I've been talking to a work colleague today who has her 20 year old daughter, who suffers from severe depression and anxiety living with her.

The girl did work at weekends until about 6 months ago when she became ill at work and was signed off by her GP with anxiety. She was then subject to phone calls and requests to go in for meetings from her employers and in the end resigned on her GP's advice because the pressure was making her so ill. At that stage she believed that having resigned she would get no benefit for a period of time, so no point making an immediate claim.

Since then she has had no money herself at all, which means that her Mum, who is on a tight budget, is now having to keep her completely and she can't do it much longer and her condition has worsened.

The girl can no longer get out of the house unaccompanied because of her anxiety (this is quite a recent development) so getting a job at the moment is out of the question. Medication has not been effective and, although she has been offered counselling, she is unable to get to the sessions.

Her Mum thinks she will not be able to claim any benefit unless or until she is able to get out of the house again and go to the DWP office. I thought this was a cop out and that in that situation she might be able to claim ESA over the phone and then get help if/as her condition improves to get her into work. She says she wants to work but the anxiety prevents her doing anything at the moment except staying where she is safe.

I've looked at the ESA regulations and I think I might be on to something, but hopefully there is someone on here who knows more.

Also ESA or JSA or doesn't JSA exist any more?

Thanks

  • ESA I think - Employment and support allowance.
Ring number on directgov website and your daughter will have to do a phone interview - you can speak to them as well, your daughter will need to give permission -so if she gets stuck they can speak to you.....from this there will be an interview I think, but you can ask that at the beginning so you will know - and ask if there is any other way? Perhaps they have someone that will come out - or perhaps the phone interview is enough.
    Have ni number ready.

She can claim online or over the phone. For the first 13 weeks she will be on the assessment rate ans will have to submit fit notes, during this time she should get an ESA50 form, it might be worth seeing CAB to get help with filling it in. At this point she can also send in supporting evidence from her GP and any specialists she might see.

Based on the ESA50 she may or may not be called for a medical, if she can get support from her GP she may be able to get a home appointment where they come to her.

After this 1 of 3 things will happen. She'll either get put in the Work Related Activity Group, or the Support Group;. Or she will be found fit for work and advised to claim JSA-however she can appeal this (needs a GL24? form).

    Hope that helps

  • If she cannot leave the house unaccompanied then she is likely to qualify for at least a lower rate Mobility component of DLA, which is not means-tested or reliant on NI Contributions record.

Maybe she needs money whilst she gets better? Recovering from anxiety and depression isn't a one minute visit to the GP and it is over you know...

I was on ESA for 18 weeks (I was fit for work after that) for anxiety and depression. So it took 4 and a half months to get better.

    Don't be so jugmental

Well if the thread was entitled:
Benefits for cancer patient 20 years old.

I would say that exact same thing. So cancer is irrelevant to this current thread., Stop trying to make me feel guilty because it wont work.
